Zangi

In 1127 he became Muslim (q.v.) atabeg (i.e., independent governor) of Mosul, located in northern Iraq on the Tigris River across from ancient Ninevah. In 1128 he united Mosul and Aleppo (q.v.). In 1144, a year after the death of John II (q.v.), he conquered Edessa (q.v.), which created panic in the Crusader states. The Second Crusade (q.v.) was called as a result of the fall of Edessa. After his death in 1146, the unification of the Muslim Near East continued with Nur-al-Din and Saladin (qq.v.).
